Hemingway’s famously plain declarative sentences linger in the mind like poetry…īut what’s most shocking about the book is its lean, adjective-free style. The Sun Also Rises first appeared in 1926, and yet it’s as fresh and clean and fine as it ever was, maybe finer. He comes to the assumption that the more money he has, the more people respect him. And each and every one of them prefers to drown their problems with the floods of wine at in-town cafes & bars. However, we come to find out that his “friends” are just as miserable as he is, if not more so. One way, he discovers, is to be around friends and drink lots of wine. Ultimately, the story is a way into the mind of Jake Barnes & how he tries to survive in the post war world. Afterwards, he acknowledges to Jake that seeing Lady Brett with Pedro was the last straw on the camel’s back. This is where the jealousy of Cohn gets out of control, when he goes off on a rampage beating Jake, Bill, and, ultimately, Pedro. The famous, young bullfighter, Pedro, peaks the interest of Lady Brett, and the two begin a not-so-secret love affair.

We find out that she is engaged to Mike Campbell, who is a friend of Jake.Īnother late, but important, character comes when the group shows their interest in the bullfights. She comes through as a pretentious, self-assured woman, who says exactly what she feels, to exactly who she feels like saying. However, she seems to get some kind of rise from seeing guys ogle her. Cohn also starts to become obsessed with Lady Brett so much so that things take a turn for the worst because of this obsession, which will end his ties with every other character in the book.īrett seems imperviously blind to her effect on anyone. We find out first that our speaker, Jake, was infatuated with this seductress. Considered to be the “perfect” woman, Brett – as she is referred to – seems to cast a spell on every man she spends any time with. Next, we have the love interest of, seemingly, every man in the book, Lady Brett Ashley. However, we don’t find out until about the end of the story why Jake comes to start his story with the life of the man he calls Cohn.

At the same time, Jake tends to not let anything bother him, from the idea of his war-induced impotence, to the fact that his “love” happens to want to day a lowly, bankrupt, angry drunk.įirst, we have Robert Cohn, who Jake – or Hemingway – starts to analyze and pick apart. The main character, and speaker, Jake, is a World War I veteran and United States expatriate, who has a strong feeling, whether positive, or negative, against everyone in his life. The book has moments that have potential to catch the interest of the reader & bring him/her into the world of the characters, but then they crash.
